A Sweet Season

Wow. The summer zipped by and it's September already. My son Joseph is diving into 5th grade, joining the other 5th graders as examples that the little kids look up to (or at least, that's the idea). Meanwhile my daughter Stephanie has started 1st grade and still loving school: learning new things and making friends is what it's all about for her.

Being parents is always challenging, but right now, it's a cool season. The kids can still be hyperactive at times, and yet they are pretty sweet. They're learning to love God and to trust Him and follow Him.

How so?

Stephanie's at that magical age where she loves to read. And the Bible has become an exciting compilation of true stories with love and adventure and courage and tragedy and redemption. Okay, maybe she doesn't quite get the whole idea about redemption yet.

Joe is co-leading a bible study with a bunch of guys in his 5th grade. They've also attracted some friends from the neighborhood too. They're going through the book of James, asking good questions to keep the group thinking.

Certainly all kids will still frequently do childish things. It's fine to be goofy and have boatloads of fun. But it's also cool to see them wanting to do more for God. It's a splendid opportunity to stand alongside and cheer for them as they do it.
